Of all the tasty treats available at Disneyland, none are as memorable and hard to find in the “real world” as the hand-dipped corn dogs at the Little Red Wagon Corn Dog cart by Main Street or Corn Dog Castle in California Adventure. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve waited outside that cute little red wagon to get our giant, crispy corn dog. This ain’t your typical frozen variety found at your grocer. This is a thick, meaty and crunchy delight. You’ve never had any corndog like it. And with the park closures and uncertain future of theme parks, not to mention the now $10 price tag on one of these—it was time to crack the code.

My version is so close to Disneyland’s corn dogs, my kids thought it was the same! Go ahead, make these at home and reminisce back to all the fun memories at Disneyland. Enjoy your summer!

Use jumbo or colossal sized beef franks if you want them to be similar in size to the ones you get at Disneyland. These Nathan’s colossal worked well for me, Hewbrew National Quarter Pound beef franks would be great too.

Use a tall drinking glass to hold the batter, once the batter gets low, hold and tilt the glass to get a thick coating of batter on the franks.

Ingredients

  • 4-6 Jumbo Beef Franks or 6-8 Regular Beef Franks
  • 1 Cup + 2 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal
  • ½ Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter or Vegetable Shortening, melted
  • 2-3 Quarts Frying Oil, (I used peanut oil)

Special Supplies

Method

  • 1)

In a large bowl, combine 1 Cup + 2 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour, 1 Cup Yellow Cornmeal, ½ Cup Granulated Sugar, 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder, 1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt and whisk very well and set aside. In another bowl, add 2 Tablespoons Melted Butter, 1 Large Egg & 1 Cup of Milk and whisk gently until the egg is combined. Pour the milk mixture into the flour, stir until it’s combined & pour batter into a tall drinking glass.

  • 2)

Heat 3 inches of oil in a large dutch oven until it reaches 375°F – use a deep fry thermometer to monitor the temp. Dry each hotdog well with paper towels, insert sticks into the hotdogs & dip the hotdogs into the batter right before dropping into the the oil (try to get at thick coating of batter on them), fry 2-3 corn dogs at a time until they are dark brown (Disneyland fries them until they are very crispy). Let them drain on a wire rack for 2 minutes before serving. Wait until the oil temp returns to 375°F before frying the next batch. Serve with apple slices or Lay’s classic potato chips. Enjoy!
