IKEA released their meatball recipe last year, but I wonder if it was a great idea for them since this homemade version is 100x better than the meatballs they serve at the IKEA cafeteria. After making this recipe, I don’t think I could ever go back to eating the ones from IKEA. These are moist and tender, the cream sauce is absolutely amazing, the true star of this dish – just the perfect balance of flavors (the sauce would be great on pork chops or chicken as well). I guess I’ll still have to stop by IKEA once in a while just to grab a jar of Lingonberry Jam

Ingredients
MEATBALLS
- 1 lbs Ground Beef, at least 20% fat
- 0.6 lbs Ground Pork
- 1 Large Onion, finely chopped
- 1 Garlic Clove, pressed through garlic press
- 1 Cup Breadcrumbs
- 1 Large Egg
- 5 Tablespoons Whole Milk
- 1 Teaspoon Fine Sea Salt
- ¼ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
- ¼ Teaspoon Allspice
- Lingonberry Jam, optional
CREAM SAUCE
- 3 Tablespoons Butter
- 3 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour
- ⅔ Cup Vegetable Stock
- ⅔ Cup Beef Stock
- ⅔ Cup Heavy Cream
- 2 Teaspoons Soy Sauce or Maggi Seasoning
- 1 Teaspoon Dijon Mustard
Method
- 1)
In a large bowl, add 1 Cup Breadcrumbs, 5 Tablespoons Whole Milk, 1 Large Egg, 1 finely chopped Onion, 1 pressed Garlic Clove, 1 Large Egg, 1 Teaspoon Fine Sea Salt, ¼ Teaspoon Ground Black Pepper, ¼ Teaspoon Allspice and stir to combine well. Add 1 lbs Ground Beef and 0.6 lbs Ground Pork, use your hands to combine well.
*You can also add a pinch or two of nutmeg or allspice, it’s not in their posted recipe, but it does enhance the flavor
- 2)
Use a 2 Tablespoon Scoop, to make even sized meatballs, roll with your hands to make them round and place onto a plate. Cover with plastic and refrigerate for 30-60 minutes, it will help them hold their shape when cooking.
- 3)
Pre-heat oven to 350°F. Add about 1 Tablespoons of oil to a frying pan, use med-high heat and brown the meatballs. Add the meatballs to a oven safe baking dish, cover with foil and bake for 15-20 minutes.
- 4)
Make the Cream Sauce while the meatballs are cooking. Add 3 Tablespoons Butter and melt on medium heat, add 3 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour and whisk for about 2 minutes. Add ⅔ Cup Vegetable Stock, ⅔ Cup Beef Stock, ⅔ Cup Heavy Cream, 2 Teaspoons Soy Sauce, 1 Teaspoon Dijon Mustard and whisk until smooth, bring to a simmer and stir until it thickens.
- 5)
Plate meatballs with cream sauce, serve with your favorite potatoes or vegetables and a side of lingonberry jam. Enjoy!
