This is a quick and simple meal that my family loves!  It’s a Yoshinoya-style Japanese Beef Bowl (Gyudon) – extra thin shaved beef steak is simmered in a delicious sauce and served over rice.  Trader Joe’s carries packages of shaved beef steak, Asian markets will usually have beef for shabu shabu or you can ask your butcher to use a deli slicer to shave a steak very thin (it doesn’t work well with hand sliced beef since it’s not thin enough & will be chewy)

Ingredients

  • 1 Pound Shaved Beef Steak or Shabu Shabu Beef
  • 1¼ Cups Beef Broth
  • 1 Large Onion, cut into ⅓ inch slices
  • ¼ Cup Soy Sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons Mirin
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons Oil
  • ½ Teaspoon Dashi Powder, (optional)
  • 4 Servings Cooked Short Grain Rice
  • Beni Shoga / Pickled Red Ginger, (optional)

Method

  • 1)

Use a large non-stick skillet, add 2 Teaspoons Oil use med-high heat. Sauté Onions for about 4 minutes. Add 1¼ Cups Beef Broth, ¼ Cup Soy Sauce, 3 Tablespoon Mirin, 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar, ½ Teaspoon Dashi Powder, turn to high heat to bring it to a boil, then turn down to med-low to simmer until the onions are very soft and the sauce is reduced by half.

  • 2)

Turn the heat to med-high and add Shaved Beef Steak, if it’s clumpy, peel / separate the slices of steak before adding. Stir to ensure the steak slices are separated and cook just until it’s no longer pink. Add Beef and Onions to each rice bowl and top with Pickled Red Ginger and Ichimi Togarashi if you prefer. Enjoy!
